Editorial & Corrections Policy
The standards that govern our journalism, and how we put things right when we get them wrong.
Our commitment
The Indus Compass is committed to accurate, fair and independent journalism. This policy explains the standards our editors and reporters follow. It applies to all content we publish, on our website and across our social media channels.
Accuracy and verification
- We aim to verify every fact before publication, using primary sources and documents wherever possible.
- Claims that cannot be independently verified are clearly attributed to their source.
- We distinguish between confirmed facts, allegations and speculation.
- Images and videos from third parties are checked for authenticity and credited where possible.
Sourcing
We prefer named, on-the-record sources. Anonymous sources are used only when the information is of significant public interest, cannot be obtained any other way, and the source’s identity is known to at least one editor. We explain to readers, where possible, why a source was granted anonymity.
Fairness and right of reply
When our reporting includes serious allegations against a person or organisation, we make a genuine effort to contact them before publication and to report their response fairly.
News and opinion
News reporting is kept separate from opinion. Opinion pieces are clearly labelled and published in our Opinion section. The views expressed in opinion pieces are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Indus Compass.
Independence and conflicts of interest
Our journalists must avoid conflicts of interest, or the appearance of them. Any relevant personal or financial interest must be disclosed to an editor, and where appropriate, to readers. Advertisers and commercial partners have no influence over editorial decisions.
Use of technology and AI
Any use of automated tools in producing content is overseen by an editor, and every article is reviewed and approved by a named journalist, who takes responsibility for its accuracy.
Corrections
We make mistakes, and when we do, we correct them promptly and transparently.
- Corrections: When we publish a factual error, we correct the article and add a note at the end explaining what was changed and when.
- Clarifications: Where an article is accurate but could be misunderstood, we add a clarification.
- Updates: When a developing story changes, we update the article and show an “Updated” time alongside the original publication time.
- We do not silently remove or rewrite published content, except for legal reasons or to protect someone’s safety.
How to request a correction
If you believe we have published something inaccurate, please send us a message through our Contact page, choose “Correction request” as the topic, and include:
- The headline or link of the article
- The specific statement you believe is wrong
- Any evidence or sources that support your correction
Our editors review every request and aim to respond within two working days.
Complaints
If you are not satisfied with our response to a correction request or complaint, you may ask for your complaint to be referred to the Editor-in-Chief, Javed Farooqi, through our Contact page.
